Regatta Invitation
Dear Sailing Friend,
Along with inviting your participation in the 4th Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta on Saturday, September 27, 2008, we ask you to join us in welcoming Merrill Lynch as the event’s presenting sponsor. With a 34% increase from 85 boats at the outset in 2005 to last year’s 114 participants, this event is well on its way to achieving the Boston Harbor Island Alliance’s goal… to create an event for sailing on the Boston sports calendar comparable to what the Boston Marathon and the Head of the Charles do for running and rowing.
Special thanks for this success go to the support of both state and city governments, the Mass Bay Sailing Association and numerous area yacht clubs.
The Boston Harbor Islands Regatta is a pursuit race with boats handicapped at the start (1st boat to finish wins) on a figure-eight course around islands with Georges Island at the crossing point. Unique among yachting events, the entire race course is visible by spectators from the ramparts of Georges Island, which is an easy ferry ride from Boston’s Long Wharf and other Mass Bay points. All this with a glorious backdrop of the city skyline and Boston Light, the oldest lighthouse station in America.
There are prizes for three divisions: Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker and the City’s Boat Clubs.
This 2008 event will be particularly meaningful as it is the finale in the Mass Bay Sailing Pursuit Race Championship series. For more information on this series, please visit www.MassBaySailing.org.
The skipper’s meeting is scheduled for the Pavilion at the Boston Harbor Hotel on Friday, September 26. All participants are then invited to a reception at the Daily Catch. On Saturday, September 27, participants, families and friends will enjoy an early post-race cookout on Georges Island for the Awards Ceremony. The public ferries will be departing from downtown Boston every hour, with additional service from Quincy.
Mark your calendar, send in your entry, and spread the word to fellow sailors about this spectacular event. Make sure to tell friends and family, they too can spend the day on Georges Island: hike historic Fort Warren, take a fishing lesson, dance to Dixieland music, celebrate your victory or simply enjoy a beautiful day on behalf of a great cause.
Alliance promotes public use and awareness of the Boston Harbor Islands national park area. One of our goals is for every Boston-area child to visit the park. Your support of the 4th Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta helps make that happen. Visiting the natural and cultural resources that continue to develop, on the islands and in the harbor, helps children understand their future roles as citizens and environmental stewards.
We look forward to your participation and thank you for your support. If you are unable to race, we ask you to consider making a donation supporting the event and the mission of the Island Alliance in one of the sponsorship categories offered, perhaps naming a trophy in honor of a favorite boat, sailing friend or family member. Then come join us at two of the best social events of the Fall Season.
Most cordially yours,
Tom Powers, President, Boston Harbor Island Alliance
Enid L. Beal, Boston Harbor Island Alliance Development Chair and Regatta Chair
Robert L. Johnstone, III Race Director, Boston Harbor Islands Regatta
